Key Words, Keyword Phrases and Search Queries
Search engines base their search results largely on close matches to the key words found in the search query typed in compared to the keywords on the web pages. Position and frequency play a significant role.
To get the best search engine rankings each page of your website (that you want listed) needs to be optimized.
Treat each important page separately emphasising different aspects of your overall message and you increase your chances of getting good results (because each one should be more specific and you get more bites of the cherry)
- Think key word phrases not key words. There is a lot of competition so you stand a far better chance to rank well for specific phrases where there is less competition.
- Think like your target audience. What would they search for? Try to come up with as many keyword phrases as you can think of that relate to the page you are optimizing. Ask a few other people to do the same for you to validate your own selections.
- Check out the competition. Put your keyword phrases into the search engines and look at the websites of the top few (after any paid for listings). Look at their copy and meta data.
- Only use keywords that are relevant to your website
- Develop a list of keyword phrases for each web page that you optimize for the search engines.
